During its 85-minute running time, this jarring experimental film takes a no-holds-barred look at the way women have been treated and depicted in Western art. Starting with Medieval paintings and continuing through the Renaissance and Dutch masters to modern abstractions, director Antoinetta Angelidi illustrates how artists can show females as somewhat less than warmly human. As she makes her points, Angelidi has the camera focus on canvasses and then brings them alive, creating a kind of horrific vision that emphasizes the worst among the historical and artistic attitudes toward women.
